A clinic that was invisible online

Dr. Kheng Kien Soo runs a family and integrative medicine practice in Luyang, Kota Kinabalu, the kind of clinic where people arrive with a long-standing problem rather than a cold. Years of explaining the same things to patients had produced a substantial body of writing, on ageing, hormones, gut health, heart disease, cancer care and everything around them. None of it was reachable. Anyone searching for answers found nothing, and every question had to be asked again in the consultation room.

Three languages, not one site translated three times

Sabah does not read in one language. Patients arrive in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese, and a clinic that only speaks one of those is closed to the other two. The site was built trilingual from the first line rather than translated afterwards. Every page exists once per locale, the language switcher moves you to the same page in your language rather than dumping you on the homepage, and the whole thing is wired for search engines in all three, with hreflang and a locale-partitioned sitemap so each language ranks on its own terms.

What we built

A static site with no database and no server to keep alive, built to be fast on a phone on Sabah mobile data:

  • A full article library of over a hundred patient education pieces, each published in all three languages, browsable by topic
  • Service pages for family medicine, healthy ageing, hormonal health and nutritional and functional medicine
  • A trilingual language switcher that keeps you on the page you were reading, and a root URL that reads the browser's language and sends the visitor to the matching version
  • An enquiry form that reaches the clinic without a database behind it, rate limited so nobody can flood the inbox
  • MedicalClinic and Physician structured data on every page, feeding the clinic name, address, hours and credentials straight to Google local search
  • Self-hosted fonts and system CJK fallbacks, so no visitor request leaves for a third party and Chinese pages stay light
  • A medical disclaimer in the footer of every page, and a PDPA-shaped privacy policy and terms in all three languages

The hard part

Health copy is not ordinary copy. It has to be accurate, it has to stay on the right side of Malaysian medical advertising rules, and it has to say the same thing in three languages without one version quietly promising more than another. The build treats a missing translation as a build failure rather than a silent gap, so a page cannot go live in one language and vanish in the next. The enquiry form deliberately collects only enough to call someone back, no medical history, because health details sitting in a third-party inbox are a risk to the patient and to the clinic.

Where it stands now

Klinik Dr. Kheng has a site that does the work of a first consultation. A patient searching in any of Sabah's three main languages can find the clinic, read a proper answer in their own language, see what the practice actually treats, and send an enquiry. The writing that used to live only in the consultation room now reaches people before they walk in.

Project outcome

Built a trilingual clinic site for a Kota Kinabalu physician, carrying a library of over a hundred patient education articles in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese, with an enquiry form, medical structured data for local search and no database to maintain.
